Back To School: Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pain

Optimal Health Chiropractic and Massage Discusses Back To School: Neck, Back, and Shoulder Pains

High school, college, and vocational students tend to suffer from pain or discomfort of the body when the back-to-school time arrives. The use of backpacks and sitting for long durations of time contributes to this. If you are experiencing shoulder pain, are dealing with neck pain, or have been feeling back pain, contact Optimal Health Chiropractic and Massage in Edmonds, WA. Here are some tips to help alleviate pain when going to daily classes.

Make Sure Backpacks Are Appropriate

Several students select backpacks that cause them pain when they are filled with textbooks and classroom materials. It is best to refrain from placing too many items inside of this bag as it will put pressure on your spine, causing back or shoulder pain as a result. Use a locker to keep books contained between classes if possible. If several items are to be carried, separate them between a backpack and the arms to reduce weight on the back.

Take Breaks From Long Periods of Sitting

Sitting at a desk without moving the body around can lead to neck or back pain. Make it a habit to get up from your desk to stretch the body for a few seconds if possible. This can be done at least once an hour to keep blood circulation flowing properly and to reduce muscle stiffness.

Avoid Looking At Devices or Paperwork Below Eye Level

When you look downward for long periods of time, you will put stress upon the back of your neck. You will also suffer from poor posture. This is often noticed when using a cell phone or computer without stretching the neck or looking up from the device. Consider using a book or device holder to keep materials at a higher level to help you avoid neck problems.
