What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Session

Acupuncture at Optimal Health Chiropractic and Massage: What to Expect

You might be somewhat surprised to hear from our team at Optimal Health Chiropractic and Massage that acupuncture might do you a world of good. Our Edmonds WA clinic does indeed offer this service as a natural complement to our other safe, drug-free healing modalities. When should you consider acupuncture, and what will you encounter at your first treatment session?

When Do We Recommend Acupuncture?

Don't be too surprised to receive a recommendation for acupuncture at our chiropractic center. This time-tested treatment method has proven itself effective against a wide range of ailments over thousands of years. Acupuncture's ability to release the body's natural painkillers (endorphins) and normalize nerve function makes it a potent treatment method for sinus problems, joint pain, chronic pain conditions, acute pain relief, neuropathy, men's and women's health issues, pediatric health challenges, addiction, stress management, and even preventative wellness care. Your acupuncture treatment may be prescribed as part of a larger, holistic plan that also includes chiropractic adjustment, massage therapy, and other treatment modalities.

The Acupuncture Experience

Preparing for your acupuncture sessions is simple enough. Wear loose clothing that can be shifted out of position for treatment of specific body parts, and you won't have to strip down for the session. Eat something in the hours before your session so your body will be able to direct energy toward the treatment without making you feel dizzy or faint. When you arrive for your session, our acupuncturist, Dijana Novak, will discuss your symptoms, health challenges and treatment goals with you. An examination of your tongue (a common diagnostic method in Traditional Chinese Medicine) may also occur. These preparations help us administer the most precisely-targeted treatment possible.

The "elephant in the room" for many first-time acupuncture patients is the idea of the needles causing pain. But while you might feel a tiny sensation as the needles are inserted, the needles themselves are simply too fine to cause pain. You may receive needles in specific patterns in areas of your body that seemingly have little relationship to your actual symptoms. This is because acupuncture points in one part of the body are known to affect other body parts, including internal organs. For instance, acupuncture points in the hand can affect everything from the spine and feet to the liver, windpipe and stomach. The right combination of acupuncture point manipulation can therefore address your individual needs.

Following your treatment, you may feel unusually alert, relaxed, euphoric or relaxed; you might even feel some mild flu-like symptoms. These are all normal responses, and the relief you achieve from the treatment should greatly outweigh them.
