Muscle strain happens, and sprains are common as well. Whether it is a sports injury, an accident or just the result of doing everyday tasks, sprains and strains can put you out of commission for days or even weeks. What is the difference between a muscle strain or a sprain? How are they treated and how can your chiropractor help?

What Does It Mean To Sprain Something?

A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched or torn. This is most often the result of a fall or other injury, such as twisting your ankle. Sprains most often occur in ankles, knees, wrists, and fingers. Sprains can be quite painful and debilitating and in extreme cases require surgery. They can also be treated with chiropractic care.

What Does It Mean To Strain Something?

A strain, while also painful, is a completely different type of injury and takes place in the muscle or tendon. This is most often the result of some type of overexertion or repetitive motion. Good examples of strain include lifting objects incorrectly or that are too heavy. In addition to doing vigorous exercise without warming up or doing the exercise incorrectly. The back is one of the most common locations for strains which is why it’s imperative to make better choices when exercising to prevent injuries.

It's always important to take care and precaution when lifting and to be mindful of your workspace and habits to avoid strain. 

What Can Be Done About Sprains and Muscle Strain?

For many cases of muscle strain, the best course of action is rest. An anti-inflammatory medication can help, as well as cold compresses. However, you may want to seek medical attention for pain that is severe, limited range of motion or persistent pain. 

For sprains, muscle strain and sports injury, your chiropractor can help. Instead of simply doing an X-ray and writing a prescription, your chiropractor can use a combination of soft tissue massage and trigger point therapy along with ultrasound and inferential treatments to help relieve pain and facilitate healing.
